This trip is of 21 days duration, and is open to anyone who wishes to trek as well as those who wish to climb. For non-climbers, there would be 2 days rest at base camp from where the area could be explored whilst the climbers are on the mountain.

The trip will be led by Pete Hill, who has climbed in the Himalaya on many expeditions. The accommodation on the trek will be in tents, with all camping and eating stops being organised by our local trekking company.

Langtang region is a popular destination for trekking and climbing due to the spectacular views of mountains of Nepal and Tibet. Easy access to the area and the availability of several peaks for acclimatization make this region an ideal destination for both novice and experienced climbers.

Naya Kanga is an attractive peak rising to the west of the Ganja La pass (5,122m). Ascending to Ganja La and the summit of Naya Kanga offer the spectacular panoramic views of mountains in Nepal and Tibet including Langshisa Ri (6,310m), Pemthang Ri (6,836m), Shisapangma (8,046m), Langtang Lirung (7,246m), Pemthang Kapro Ri (6,830m) and Langtang II (6,581m).

The normal route of`ascent to Naya Kanga is via the north-east ridge, following a line of ice and snow. We will follow the Langtang trekking route to Kyanjin (3,900m), and north of here there are several mountains that provide both magnificent views and useful acclimatization. Northeast of Kyangjin Ri (4,773m) is Tserko Ri (5001m), which provides good climbing for acclimatization.

Crossing the Langtang Khola below Kyangjin, we climb steeply along the ridge through a forest of rhododendron and juniper. Finally climbing more gently, we arrive at yak pastures of Ngegang at about 4150m. We continue following the trail to Ganja La climbing steeply through moraine. We leave the Ganja La trail to climb steeply up more moraine to reach the eastern end of the glacier shelf beneath the north-east face of Naya Kanga. At this point we will set up high camp for the ascent.

We now cross the glacier shelf to the foot heading to the north ridge and climb the couloir to the notch at the base of the ridge. Then we turn the ice nose on the left, after which the ridge widens and leads to a small col on the east-west summit ridge The summit is only 30m higher.

We will descend as far as we can that day, and then follow the itinerary below to return to the roadhead.
THE ITINERARY

The following itinerary is for guidance only, as things are subject to change at the last minute. We will, however, endeavour to keep as close to this as possible.

DAY 01: ARRIVE KATHMANDU Arrive in Kathmandu, meet our staff, and you will be transferred to your hotel. Welcome dinner and trip briefing about the trek/tour. (D)

Day 02: Kathmandu sightseeing. Optional (price included) sightseeing trip to Bouddhanath, the biggest Buddhist stupa in Nepal, and then to Pashupatinath, the biggest Hindu Temple and finally to Bhaktapur, a typical Newar village where the culture has remained unchanged for many years. (B)

DAY 03: KATHMANDU TO DHUNCHE Leave Kathmandu for the Langtang region of Nepal. Our drive by private bus can take anywhere from four hours to most of the day, depending on the state of the road. The drive is stunning, as we leave the fertile Kathmandu Valley and climb into the foothills of the Himalaya. Camping in Dhunche (1734m). (B,L,D)

DAY 04: TREK TO SHYABRU. We pass through many small villages as we begin to wind upwards out of the low farming valleys. We also have our first views of Naya Kanga today. Camping in Shyabru (2222m). (B,L,D)

DAY 05: TREK TO LAMA HOTEL Our trail descends all the way to 1580m, into thick forests of bamboo that have a feel of rainforest. At our lowest point we cross an exciting suspension bridge, and then begin the inevitable climb. The climb finishes at camp, in Changtang (known locally as Lama Hotel), 2480m. (B,L,D)

DAY 06: TREK TO LANGTANG Today's trek gives us our first taste of the challenges to come. We gain altitude very quickly, climbing steeply to our camp in the village of Langtang, at 3541m. The rewards are glimpses of the huge six and seven thousand metre peaks that surround us. (B,L,D)

DAY 07: TREK TO KYANJIN GOMPA A morning trek to Kyanjin Gompa 3900m. As we are now climbing at higher elevations, our days and distances shorten. This is essential to allow our bodies to acclimatize properly. In the afternoon we explore the gompa (Buddhist monastery) after which the village is named. (B,L,D)

DAY 08: KYANJIN GOMPA Acclimatization day in Kyanjin Gompa. If we are feeling strong we will do a day trip to Yala Peak (5550m)/ CHERKUKI (4900m) (B,L,D)

DAY 09: TREK TO NGEGANG Trek to Ngegang, just below the Ganja La pass. Our climb takes us out of the last rhododendron forests into meadows that sit above treeline. Camp is at 4190m.

DAY 10: Trek to Naya Kanga Base Camp (5015m). (B,L,D)

DAY 11: AT BASE CAMP A skills development day on the toe of the glacier. Skills we work on include traveling in rope teams, crevasse rescue skills, and climbing with crampons and axes on varied glacier terrain. We spend the night back in Base Camp. (B,L,D)

DAY 12: HIGH CAMP Provided we are acclimatizing properly, we move to High Camp today, which sits below the glacier at approximately 5400m. High altitude porters assist us, allowing us to carry only daypacks on today's climb. Trekkers who are not climbing will spend today and tomorrow exploring the high alpine valleys that surround Naya Kanga, and supporting our team of climbers. (B,L,D)

DAY 13: NAYA KANGA SUMMIT DAY! Naya Kanga Summit Day! Our climb takes us across a moraine to the edge of the glacier. After roping up and strapping on crampons, we work our way up moderately angled glacier, before climbing a steep headwall to the summit, 5844m. The views from Naya Kanga's summit are stunning, encompassing everything from the Kathmandu Valley to Shishapangma, one of the world's fourteen 8,000-metre peaks. We return all the way to Base Camp to rest and recover. (B,L,D)

DAY 14: LEISURE DAY An extra day for the climb. This can be used for additional acclimatization or bad weather anywhere in our schedule. (B,L,D)

DAY 15: TREK TO KELDANG Today we leave our base camp for the meadows of Keldang, at 4242m. While there are a number of yak herder's huts here, there is no real village. (B,L,D)

DAY 16 TREK TO DUKPU A long day along a winding ridge to the summer settlement of Dukpu, 4060m. Few locals, and fewer trekkers venture into this region of the Langtang. It is an excellent area to experience the wilderness of Nepal. (B,L,D)

DAY 17 TREK TO TARKE GYANG Today we see our first permanent settlement in a week, when we arrive at Tarke Gyang, 2550m. A large Sherpa community lives here, and we will again be surrounded by Buddhist monasteries and temples. Tonight we celebrate with our Nepali team. Any good celebration includes Sherpa dancing, a Nepali feast, and tasting the local rice beer, called chhang. (B,L,D)

DAY 18: TREK DESCEND TO KAKANI (2300m) (B,L,D)

DAY 19: TREK DESCEND TO MELAMCHE (825m) AND DRIVE TO KATHMANDU (B,L)

DAY 20 FREE DAY IN KATHMANDU. Farewell dinner in the evening. Overnight in the hotel.

DAY 21: WE TRANSFER TO THE AIRPORT FOR OUR FLIGHTS. (B)
PRE-TRIP MEETING.

We wll be offering at least one informal pre-trip meeting, at a date and location to suit group members. This will be so that everyone can get together and meet prior to the trip, at a place where we can walk or climb, as well as having a meal and a beer or two in the evening.
FLIGHTS
